This book presents state-of-the-art methodologies for the design and analysis of buried steel pipelines subjected to severe ground-induced action, including tectonic (quasi-static) effects, slope movements (landslides), liquefaction-induced actions or excavation-induced settlements. The text is an a...

Spyros A. Karamanos, is Professor of Computational Structural Mechanics, at the University of Thessaly, Greece, Department of Mechanical Engineering. From 2016-2019 he was Chair of Structural Engineering, at the School of Engineering, The University of Edinburgh, and he is currently a Honorary Visiting Professor at The University of Edinburgh. Spyros specializes in structural mechanics and integrity of energy infrastructure systems. His research interests focus on buckling and fatigue of pipelines and offshore structures, mainly tubular components and systems, using computational (finite element) methods, and experimental testing. His research has been funded primarily by European research projects, with the participation of European steel and pipeline industry. He has published more than 180 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings. Spyros has a 5-year Diploma in Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece (1989), and received his PhD in Structural Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, USA (1993).Arnold M. Gresnigt graduated in 1970 at Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering. After his military service he joined TNO to perform research on steel structures. Much of the research was on buried pipelines in settlement areas. In 1986 an overview of this research was published (Heron). Plastic design of buried pipelines was introduced (now called strain based design). In 1988 he joined the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Delft University of Technology. Main tasks were teaching and performing research on steel structures in particular welded and bolted connections and pipelines. The research on pipelines as started at TNO was continued in several national and international programmes, onshore and offshore, many of them in cooperation with Professor Spyros Karamanos.Gert J. Dijkstra, MSc, holds a civil engineering diploma from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. He was principal pipeline consultant and Director Pipelines and Infrastructure at Tebodin Consultants and Engineers in the Hague, The Netherlands, and worked on many underground pipeline projects and studies for transportation of hydrocarbons, water and district heating. He is also a member of several national and international Standardization Committees with the focus on development and implementation of design rules for buried pipelines. As such he contributed to a number of publications in this field. He was one of the founding fathers and final editors  of the Dutch national standard series for pipelines, NEN 3650, and of the international standard EN 13941-1 for buried district heating pipes. From 2007 until 2016 he was also the Chair of the Belgium-Dutch Pipelines Industries Guild.
