His areas of research and teaching include physics, electrical engineering, computing, sound technology, information science and technology, and linguistics in the 20th and 21st centuries in North America, Western Europe, and East Asia. He is working on three research projects: the discovery of electric waves and their establishment as a scientific effect in 1887-1900, grassroots innovations of digital technologies in China, Taiwan, and the US; and the soundscape of Republican China.
