Michael Hendryx, PhD, is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, School of Public Health, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, USA. He was previously a professor in public health at West Virginia University and has published extensively on the public health effects related to surface coal mining, especially mountaintop removal mining, in Appalachia. He was a previous TEDMED speaker and a Fulbright Distinguished Chair at the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. His primary interest now is in moving beyond the documentation of environmental, economic, and health problems related to fossil fuel extraction, toward identification and implementation of solutions to enable communities formerly dependent on fossil fuel economies to transition to healthier and environmentally sustainable futures.
