Ronald Camberwell is thrown into his first case by the hazard of events, quite soon after he became companion to the wealthy Mr. Nicholas. He is initiated into the methods of crime detection by the experienced Chaney, that old and trusted ex-C.I.D. man. But though still an amateur, Camberwell is no mere Dr. Watson; he promises to become an accomplished sleuth in due time.
The Wrides case at the outset is as plain as a pikestaff: no police detective and no coroner's jury--however strong their loyalty--could have any doubt that Mr. Nicholas murdered his blackmailer. Then Chaney is called in by the defence, and even the hardened reader of detective fiction can have no suspicion of where the trail will take him.
