Professor Laichang Zhang is a professor of Materials Engineering, the Program Leader, and the Head of the Centre for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing in the School of Engineering at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia. He received his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Prior to joining Edith Cowan University, he worked at Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany (2005-2006), the Leibniz-Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW) in Dresden, Germany (2006-2007), the University of Wollongong in Wollongong, Australia (2007-2009), and The University of Western Australia in Perth, Australia (2009-2012).
His research interests include metal additive manufacturing, metallic biomaterials, lightweight alloys and structures, and high-strength alloys and composites. He has considerable expertise and extensive cross-disciplinary research activities in the advanced manufacturing of different types of materials, including nanocrystalline/ultrafine-grained materials, bulk metallic glasses, biomaterials, and high-strength steels, focusing on the understanding of their processing, microstructure, and properties (e.g., mechanical properties, fatigue properties, corrosion behavior, and catalytic performance). He also served as an editor or editorial board member for more than ten journals.
