Richard Bardgett CBE is a Distinguished Professor of Ecology at Lancaster University, having previously been based at The University of Manchester. He explores how soils and their biodiversity shape terrestrial ecosystems and their response to global change. He is also interested in the practical implementation of soil ecological concepts for climate mitigation and ecosystem restoration. He served as President of the British Ecological Society (2017-to-2018) and co-founded the Global Soil Biodiversity Initiative to promote translation of soil biodiversity knowledge into policy. Richard was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2023 for services to soil ecology and climate change science.
