David A. D. Parry has been active in X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and sequence analysis of fibrous proteins for nearly 60 years. His scientific contributions at Massey University have been recognised by the award of six medals, Companionship of the New Zealand Order of Merit and election to Fellowship of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He has been President of the International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB) and Vice President of the International Council for Science (ICSU). He has contributed 246 scientific papers and has written and/or edited seven books and six special Journal issues. Pradeep K. Luther is a structural biologist working on cardiac and skeletal muscle and has used electron tomography and cryo-electron tomography to study the structure of thick filaments, the Z-band and the M-band. His research has utilised the recent advances made in cryo-electron microscopy and image processing, and this has enabled new insights to be gained into the structure and working of the sarcomere and the effects that drugs designed to tackle disease have on this important motile element. Luther is at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London.
