As only the second female rabbi to be appointed in Britain, and the first to have her own synagogue, Julia Neuberger taught for many years before becoming Chancellor of the University of Ulster from 1994 to 2000. She was also Chief Exec of The King's Fund from 1997-2004, and the government's champion of volunteering from 2007-9. She is also well known as an author, social reformer and broadcaster, whose previous books include Dying Well and The Moral State We're In.
