Alan Beattie was born in Chester in 1971. He studied history at Oxford and took a master's degree in economics at Cambridge. He worked as an economist at the Bank of England until 1998 and then joined the Financial Times where he is currently the International Economy Editor. His first book, False Economy, was a New York Times bestseller and was published in 2009. He lives in Washington.
