Charles Williams naît en 1909 au Texas. Engagé dans la marine marchande puis servant dans l'armée pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il s'installe à Los Angeles après la guerre et travaille à la radio. Il publie son premier roman, La Fille des collines, en 1951 et rencontre immédiatement le succès. Il publiera vingt-deux romans, sera adapté à treize reprises au cinéma, collaborera à l'écriture de plusieurs scénarios. Très aimé du public français, il recevra le Grand Prix de Littérature policière en 1956. Il meurt en 1975 à Los Angeles.
