Chester Himes est né en 1909 à Jefferson City, dans le Missouri, il fait ses études à l'université d'Ohio State, puis passe sept ans au pénitencier de l'état d'Ohio pour vol à main armée. C'est là qu'il écrit son premier roman. En 1953, il quitte les États-Unis, pour s'installer définitivement en Espagne. Chester Himes est l'un des romanciers noirs les plus lus, et sans doute le commentateur le plus original du problème racial aux États-Unis. Il est décédé à Alicante le 12 novembre 1984.
