Née en 1920 dans le cosmopolite et bouillonnant Shanghai, Eileen Chang publie ses premiers textes à 23 ans et rencontre un succès fulgurant : elle devient, en plein conflit sino-japonais et mondial, l’égérie littéraire du Shanghai des années 1940. Exilée à Hongkong au début des années 1950, puis aux États-Unis où elle s’éteint en 1995, elle est aujourd’hui considérée comme une icône en Chine et à travers le monde. Son œuvre a fait l’objet de très nombreuses adaptations, dont le sublime Lust,
