Née le 7 juin 1899 à Dublin, orpheline de mère à l'âge de douze ans, Elizabeth Bowen passa son adolescence dans un pensionnat anglais pour jeunes filles. Le remariage de son père, alors qu'elle a dix-neuf ans, l'émancipe et la jeune femme partage alors sa vie entre Londres et l'Italie où elle commence à écrire pour arrondir ses fins de mois, la peinture, son premier amour, ne payant pas. Après avoir pendant trois années publié des nouvelles, exercice dans lequel elle excelle, c'est en 1927
