Née dans la banlieue de Londres, Mary Wollstonecraft fréquente très tôt les cercles anarchistes et réformateurs. Essayiste et romancière anglaise de grand talent, elle séjournera à Paris pour observer la Révolution en train de s’accomplir. Elle épousera le philosophe William Godwin. Elle mourra en mettant au monde sa deuxième fille, Mary, qui épousera le poète Shelley et qui aura elle-même une belle carrière de romancière (elle est notamment l’auteure de Frankenstein).
