Journaliste littéraire, il est l'auteur de plusieurs romans et documentaires, notamment sur Mario Vargas Llosa ou encore Bruce Chatwin, dont il signe la biographie en 1999 et, en 2010, l'édition de la correspondance. Il vit aujourd'hui à Oxford.
