Susan Sontag, née à New York en 1933, est l’auteur de nombreux essais et de quatre romans. Figure de la scène new-yorkaise, icône de la révolution culturelle, elle a écrit et réalisé quatre long-métrages, et publié plusieurs pièces de théâtre. Le Prix Jérusalem, qui lui a été attribué en 2001, et le Prix de la Paix des libraires allemands, qui lui a été remis à Francfort en 2003, récompensent l’ensemble de son œuvre. Elle est morte le 28 décembre 2004 à New York. Ses livres sont traduits dans plus de trente langues. L’ampleur et la profondeur de ses réflexions continuent d’alimenter de nombreux débats intellectuels dans le monde.
