Winnie Akinyi Oduor, née le 30 juin 1991 à Nairobi, a grandi à Homa Bay, au bord du lac Victoria, avant de déménager à Ugunja à l'adolescence. À 21 ans, elle s'est installée à Nairobi pour subvenir aux besoins financiers de son fils et de ses parents. Ce livre est son premier ouvrage, dans lequel elle raconte ses expériences.
Elle a d'abord travaillé dans le commerce, puis a suivi une formation en conseil, travail social et développement communautaire. Elle a ensuite travaillé chez LVCT
